Coastal History

The History

During prohibition, the coastal cliffs, beaches, and bluff roads near Pillar Point and Moss Beach were used by smugglers: rum-running ships offshore would land whiskey on secluded beaches, then transport it inland. After Prohibition ended in 1933, the area began to see more formal residential development. In 1938, the house now known as 96 Terrace was built, reflecting the growing desirability of ocean-view coastal land. Over the ensuing decades the property stood through Moss Beach’s evolution from remote coastal land to a coveted beachside neighborhood. In 2018, an electrical fire destroyed the main house.
